Post-Abortion Bleeding & Pregnancy Concerns: What to Do

Question
I had an abortion going on 4 weeks ago, had bleeding nonstop for a week,
then for the week after that it was brownish.  The doctor had me on birth
control (the pill)  a few days after my abortion.  I didn't plan on having sex,
but did 3 weeks after abortion.  I know it was a risk, and I felt weary about it.
But the guy I had sex with can't have kids.  When I went to the doctor for a
checkup, they tested my urine and said it was slight pregnancy but she gave
me a ultra sound, and it was just stuff that needed to come out with my
period... I haven't started my period yet.  It has been almost 4 weeks.  Today I
felt sort of relieved because I thought I did, and I just bleed a little bit when I
went to the bathroom.  I am scared, and haven't taken a pregnancy test yet,
because maybe my pregnancy hormones are still there?  I hope I am not
pregnant again, and it seems crazy if I where, but what if I am and have to
get another abortion this early after already having one..

Answer
Dear Jenna,
From what I understand from your email, you were on birth control pills when you had sex. As long as you started on birth control right after the abortion, there is nothing to worry about.  The pill should be effective right away.  The doctor will often tell you to wait a month, but research shows it is effective immediately if you start it right after ending a pregnancy. If you check a pregnancy test, it will likely be positive from the prior pregnancy.
I hope this is helpful,
Doctor Joan
