Understanding Potential Pregnancy After Abortion: What You Need to Know

Question
This question may seem a little complex but I really need help. I had a medical abortion on May 20th-21st. I went to my checkup appointment and the procedure was succesful and the pregnancy was terminated.
My boyfriend and I just recently started having sex again and unfortunately we were not wise. We started out using condoms and ended up taking them off. After my appointment they gave me Lo Ovral emergency contraceptive pills. EVEn though he did not ejaculate in me I was still paranoid and took the pills. A few days after, we had started having sex again.
I have not had my period since the medical abortion and have no idea when it is supposed to come since my body is thrown off now. Also, after takin the emergency contraceptive pills I noticed I had alot of white discharge, it had no smell. A few days later, I had a small amount of brown discharge. I thought it was my period since my breasts have been sore and feel swollen but my period did not come. TOday when I went to the restroom there was jus a little bit of blood which I once again thought was my period but am not sure. I have no idea whether I am pregnant again or not. I have had no symptoms except the sore breasts, but the discharge and having taken the ecps have me worried and confused. I dont know whether to take a pregnancy test. Am I just being paranoid?

Answer
Hi, Jasmine,

There is so much going on with you that it really isn't possible for me to guess what is happening. I recommend you talk to a doctor about all this. Go to someone other than the person who provided the abortion.

Obviously, you want to avoid a repeat pregnancy and abortion. So you'll have to discipline yourself to refrain from sex for awhile. You need to give your body a chance to straighten out, and once the hormones are all out of your system, you can learn to recognize when you are fertile. You have to chart faithfully. It doesn't work if you are using any hormones. To find out more, go here:

White discharge isn't fertile mucus. Pay attention and see if you start to notice a smell. If you go to the doctor, he can see if you have an elevated white blood count.

Please be aware that your boyfriend doesn't have to ejaculate in you, if he goes in, or deposits any fluid near the opening. That can still cause pregnancy, although it's rare if he doesn't go in. Still, there is a chance.

Your breasts could be reacting to the hormones.

Because of all you have done to your body, I don't think you are being paranoid. It's not natural to do all that. Please think about your future and whether or not this is the man you want to spend your life with. You deserve a man who will cherish you and your children. So give this some thought and have a talk with your boyfriend about the risk he is subjecting you to. While sex can bring pleasure, sometimes it's not worth it because of the risks involved.

Please let me know how you do, and take care of yourself!
