Post-Surgical Abortion Pain: Is It Normal or a Concern?

I had a surgical abortion 6 days ago, I was 6wks and one day. I have had light to medium bleeding but hardly any cramping. Then starting this morning, I continued to have pain on my lower abdomen on the left side. I doesn't feel like normal menstrual cramps but a nagging pain. I am concerned because I had a bad kidney infection two years ago and this feels similar without the nausea, fever, etc.

Ibuprofren helps a little but not much. Could I have some type of infection?

Dear Marcia,
It would be extremely unlikely to have an infection from the abortion 6 weeks later. Infection usually occurs within days of the procedure.  It is probably unrelated, and yes, you should get checked for a kidney infection if you are having similar symptoms.
