Pregnancy After Medical Abortion: Understanding Your Situation

Question
Hello,

I had a medical abortion the beginning of June. I started on birth control using the Nuva Ring. About 1 month to the day I had my medical abortion, I had sex with my boyfriend and may have been too early for my Nuva ring to 'do it's job'. I took the ring out 3 weeks later, but did not have my period. I have tested positive on a home pregnancy test, but wonder if it could be due to pregnancy hormones still in my body from the abortion. Also, how likely is it I could get pregnant again 1 month after my medical abortion?

Answer
Hello, Cheryl,

It is entirely possible you could get pregnant a month after a pill abortion. I don't know how likely it is. As for the Nuva ring, it's not really that reliable. It is also possible you still had some hormones left over. If you test again, you can observe whether the positive indication is stronger or weaker than it was when you tested before. You should test a week after the first test.

As long as you continue to have sex with your boyfriend, you will be at risk of pregnancy, and you will continue to live in fear of pregnancy. The pills are poisonous in pregnant women and cause some fairly serious long term medical problems. Your boyfriend will bear none of the medical consequences; you will. He really should respect your body and protect you. He shouldn't be taking advantage of you. If you are pregnant again, please do not get another abortion. Abortion is always dangerous, no matter how it is done. It can kill you or seriously disable you. It can make you much more susceptible to breast cancer and auto-immune disease. It can harm your future children. You deserve better.

If you are pregnant again, there are organizations in California that will help you with real help, to meet your needs. They won't just subject you to dangerous procedures. You can find one near you by going to this web site:
