QuestionHello, I am a 25 year old mother of a 7 year old little girl. I got pregnant at 17 and had my daughter at 18. I am engaged to a man who is not the biological father of my daughter but has been there since she was only a few months old. When I was 19, he and I were having a lot of problems and I was in a situation where I was 19 and the only one providing for my child. I found out I was pregnant and decided to get an abortion (vacuum aspiration at 4 weeks) because I could barely afford to take care of one child and because our relationship was so unstable. Its been 6 years and now we are finally ready to conceive and have had no luck (we have been trying for over 2 years). I'm scared that he might have a low sperm count and that we will never have that chance again. Would the aspiration have anything to do with that? Please help
AnswerDear Nicole,
Congratulations on your relationship and life situation being stable enough for you to want to have another baby.
Many women are concerned when they try to get pregnant that they will have fertility problems from prior abortions. It is a myth, unless there were serious complications from the abortion. If this were the case, you would not have been getting your periods since the abortion.
You can rest assured that your uterus is fine from the procedure. An early abortion with Aspiration is one of the safest procedures available, and there is nothing to be concerned about. Be patient, and see if there are other potential causes for the fertility issues. Low sperm count could definitely be one problem that you can investigate.
I hope this is helpful, and good luck!
