Post-Abortion Recovery: Bleeding, Birth Control & What to Expect

Question
Thank you very much for any help you can give me.

I'm 18 and I live the the U.S. I had a medical abortion using mifeprex on September 11 when I was 8 weeks along. I was given birth control pills to start a couple days after the cytotec was taken. Though i wasn't perfect on the timing, I did take the pill everyday. My bleeding from the abortion stopped the day I had my 2 week check up and I was informed there was no infection or pregnancy. I've had (regrettably) unprotected sex a couple of times after the 2 week check up. I now use protection. This week I am expecting my period because i am now on the "sugar pills" part of the birth control. My questions are: Is it normal that I had only experienced a very  light period because my body just needs to get it hormones in place? If not, is it possible this means pregnancy?

The light period had occurred a couple days before my expected period and lasted at most 2-3 days becoming very scant to where I only saw it when I wiped. There was a very small amount of red, mostly brownish blood. It worries me to think that I experienced implantation bleeding. I've experienced some of the same pregnancy symptoms as before with a little nausea, little bloating (possibly caused by the iron pills I was given,) slight cramping and frequent urination. I did do an EPT test, though the results showed a dark negative line my (paranoid) mind swears i can see a very faint vertical line causing it to be positive. I've been told pregnancy hormones can still show up, so i might just have to get a blood test or wait a week or two.
Also, if in any way this could contribute, I had a recent pap smear that came back with Low-grade squamous cells. Internet research has shown i pretty much have HPV and I've recently noticed small painless flesh colored genital warts on the outside of my vaginal opening skin. Could genital warts on the cervix cause slight bleeding?

I hope I have given sufficient information and not boggled you with the unnecessary kind. Thank you again for any peace of mind you can give me.

Answer
Dear Anna,
It is common and normal to have light period after an abortion.  In addition, starting birth control frequently causes you to have light periods, especially when you just start out.  You also may be having a delayed period, which is also common and normal after an abortion, and when you first start birth control pills.

It is also possible but unlikely that you could be pregnant.  You are correct that the pregnancy test can be slightly positive from the earlier pregnancy, so it is hard to tell. The only way to know will be to check another pregnancy test one week after the first one.  If it is the same or lighter/negative, there is nothing to be concerned about.  If it is darker, you could be pregnant again.

Good luck and I hope this was helpful,
Doctor Joan
