Possible Pregnancy After Abortion: Symptoms & Concerns

Question
hi. i had an abortion early in sept ember now its almost November & still no period. Me & my bf had unprotected sex a few days after my abortion.Im starting to feel like i am pregnant again. when i was first pregnant i started breaking out in my face..frequently passing gas & using the bathroom more than the average. now the same things are occurring...i sneeze constantly as if im catching a cold but im not. i also took a test & it said negative but i still have a feeling that i am. i went to the doctor they said come back in 2 weeks because most likely if i am, it wont show up so soon.is there a possible that i could be pregnant so soon after an abortion?

Answer
It is possible to get pregnant anytime from 12-14 days after an abortion. If you had unprotected sex on or after the 12th day after your abortion, you may be pregnant again.

However, since you say you had unprotected sex only "a few days" after the abortion (and not anytime later), a pregnancy is unlikely. It's still possible - even if you used contraception, it's possible to get pregnant because contraceptives aren't perfect. But it is unlikely.

It's about 8 weeks after your pregnancy was terminated, so home pregnancy tests are pretty reliable at this point (up until 6-8 weeks after an abortion, most tests will show you positive even if you aren't pregnant because pregnancy hormone levels in your body are still high).

The pregnancy hormones in your body are slowly decreasing, but they're still around. It can take up to 6 months for your body to get rid of them completely. These leftover hormones often cause pregnancy-like symptoms, just like you're describing. It's common for people to feel nauseous, bloated, tired, etc for 3-4 months after an abortion. Same goes for other pregnancy symptoms like having no periods, urinating frequently and having heartburn/gas. Your periods, even if they come, may be too heavy, too light, too early, too late, or just plain irregular. It's impossible to prevent ovulation patterns right now.

My advice to you is just relax and take it easy for a couple of weeks. Then take the home pregnancy test again to put your mind at ease. Better still, buy a two-pack and test twice, just to be sure. And in the meantime, always use contraception.

If it turns out you are pregnant again, and you decide to have another abortion (there is no extra risk in having multiple abortions, even close together), PLEASE DON'T PUT ANYTHING IN YOUR VAGINA FOR TWO WEEKS AFTER THE ABORTION. I am shocked that your doctor didn't tell you this time. It's very important: you can't use tampons, take baths, go swimming or have sex for two weeks after an abortion (surgical or medical). This is because your cervix is open for about 10-14 days after an abortion, so anything you put in your vagina (no matter how clean you think it is) can cause an infection of the cervix or the uterus. Many people who develop infections in their cervix or uterus become infertile. This is a serious matter. Please remember this, and tell as many people as you can - including your doctor. It's dangerous if your doctor is not informing patients about this.
