QuestionHello and thank u for taking the time to answer my question. I took my iud out 7/1/10 (complications) and was pregnant shortly after. I had a surgical abortion on 8/18/10. I was 6-7 wks according to the ultrasound performed a the clinic.I have had very little bleeding, only when i wipe at the bathroom. No cramping at all. Is that really normal after the procedure I had done?
They gave me a nuva ring to start sunday 8/22/10. I didn't insert it yet. I'm going to mexico 9/14/10 for a week and i'm wondering if my bleeding will subside by then if i insert the ring 8/23/10? If i put the nuva ring in today 8/23 it will be due to come out the day before I leave 9/13. That's not good because that's my cycle time.
My question is is there a way to stop the light bleeding that I'm having with "nuva ring" or a 'pill". Not to sound selfish but I have had this trip planned for ages and my cycle is the last thing I wanted during my vacation. I have been on the nuva ring before. And honestly every once in a while when I didn't want a cycle for some reason I would reinsert a ring during week 4 (cycle time). I just wanted to know how that would play out after having a surgical abortion. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
AnswerHello, Shanita,
You're welcome.
I can certainly understand that you don't want to deal with bleeding during your vacation. I had a similar situation when one of our kids got married. I was due to have a period, and at that point in my life, I was close to hemorrhaging whenever I had one. So I certainly wanted to delay it. So I tried taking a heavy dose of birth control. It didn't make any difference. I was worried sick all evening. I kept using the birth control afterward, hoping it would control the bleeding. It didn't, and now I am sorry I did that.
Nuva Ring has hormones in it. A lot of these products tend to cause at least spotting. They can also cause a cardiovascular incident, or other damage. Since an abortion disrupts a woman's delicately balanced hormones, there is no way to predict how your body will react to Nuva Ring now that you had an abortion so recently. All abortions damage a woman's body, but sometimes, the damage isn't obvious for awhile. Most women have told me they bleed very little after a surgical abortion. Unless you sustained an unusual injury, I don't find your experience to be particularly unusual, either, although there's no such thing as "normal" after an abortion. There probably isn't a way to determine how your body will react this time under the circumstances.
One thing you can do that will help you determine whether this will be a problem is to test for pregnancy. As long as you still have pregnancy hormones, you probably won't bleed. But by 9/14, it will have been weeks, so you might have a period then. If you don't use any hormones before then, you can possibly use fertility awareness. A woman normally ovulates about 14 days before her period will start if she doesn't become pregnant. But even though these two things will give you more information, you still won't really know for sure.
Had you stayed pregnant, you probably wouldn't have a problem with bleeding. But that's obviously water under the bridge.
Please don't ever have an abortion again. It IS dangerous and can cause your body serious damage and even death. Surgical abortion can also harm your future children. If you want more information, let me know.
I wish I could tell you more, but there's no way anybody is going to be able to say. I hope things work out as you hope, and I hope you have a good vacation. Let me know how it turns out.
