Post-Medical Abortion: Ovulation and Cycle Changes - Expert Advice

Question
Hello doctor Joan, I feel you are the best person to ask this question to, great knowledge and skill. I  recently had a medical abortion. Everything seem too go ok, bleeding and spotting on and off 3 weeks had follow up at 2 weeks everything clear. My concern is ovulation. Before taking the abortion pill, I could always predict it stetchy Cm, light cramping etc on a regular basis. But now i have yet too notice any of these things it has been 3 months. I've also been using opk test sticks to detect ovulation. I've came across a positive, but i have also been told you can still get a positive, and there not be ovulation. It just does not seem like I'm ovulating at all. I have not been on any form of birth control, just using condoms. Is it normal to not have your usual signs of ovulation. Does medical abortion have such an impact on ovarian function? I also would like to add I am getting my periods regularly. But they seem a little off as well lighter and a bit scanty but on the regular. Thank you for you time and help in advance. I'm in need. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Answer
With the medical abortion, it takes a few weeks to get back to a normal cycle.  You can have an ovulation within 7 days after taking the medication.  It can take up to 8-10 weeks to get a normal cycle.  We have our patients not use ovulation prediction until after 3 cycles.  The initial periods can be lighter because the lining has to stabilize.
