Understanding Positive Pregnancy Tests After a Miscarriage: What to Do

Question
I recently did two home pregnancy tests because by period was very light.  They were both positive.  I then had quantitative hcg blood test which was 175.  I followed up with three more hcg blood tests, which were 175.9, 191, and just today 170.  I started bleeding like normal period the night after my first blood test and continued to have a normal period that went from 12/13/06 to 12/17/06.  The doctor did an ultrasound on 12/20/06, which showed nothing in the uterus.  I had some dark red spotting on 12/22/06 and now feel crampy and a heaviness in the low abdomen, where my uterus is.  It feels like I'm going to get my period again.    Could I have gotten pregnant in the last week and the spotting I had Friday be implantation bleeding?

Thanks,
Debbie

Answer
Dear Debbie,

It really is impossible to know for sure. However, I must say it is very highly unlikely that you would have miscarried through the week of the 17th and then ovulated, conceived, and experienced implantation bleeding within 5 days.

More than likely what you are experiencing is just your uterus trying to completely empty after the miscarriage. It is not unusual for a woman's body to take a few cycles to get back to normal after a miscarriage. That is why it is generally recommended that women wait through three normal cycles before getting pregnant again to increase the success rate of the next pregnancy.

I hope this information helps you and answers your question. I wish you the best and hope you have a joyful New Year.
