Massage and Seizures: Exploring the Potential Connection

Question
Can a massage cause a seizure? I had a great massage yesterday morning.
The therapist worked a lot on knotted muscles in my neck shoulders and
back. It was a deep tissue massage with pressure point stimulation. The
massage lasted for ninety minutes. That night I woke up in the middle of the
night and had a seizure. This morning I feel sore but not in a bad way.

Answer
Hi Steve,

I hope you are feeling better and had a great Thanksgiving Day.

It is unlikely that a massage would cause a siezure but I suppose anything is within the realm of possibility.    My first thoughts are 1. - are you under medical supervision for your condition, and 2.- can you think of any triggers that might have been present at the massage?  It seems to me that a trigger during would have causes a seizure much more quickly than what you report.  If your condition is not controlled with medicine then you really should ask for medical clearance to receive a deep tissue massage.

That said, massage does affect the nervous system, although typically in a temporary and calming fashion - which should actually make a seizure *less* likely.

Best Wishes!
