A Brief History of Acrylic Nails: From 1970s Innovation to Today

Question
Please could you give me the brief history of acrylics, is it right that they started in 1970 or was it before then?

Answer
Hi Sharon! I'm sorry it took me a while to answer your question, Thanksgiving is my favorite time of year! So Happy Thanksgiving!

I wasn't sure when Acrylic Nails where actually invented. But as far as the little research I've recently done,  1970 is true! But, at that time the "glue on acrylic nails" where the only thing invented, after time came the process of Liquid and Powder mixing. This idea came from dentists who used acrylic to make false teeth. The dentists used, Methyl-Methacrylate (MMA) an agent in acylic. It was deemed hazardous by the FDA in the use of acrylic nails, 'only'. The Nail Industry then produced a new product, (IMA) legal to use in acrylic nails.

Although it is illegal to use MMA in nail products, some salons still try to use MMA because its extremely cheap compared to the legal products. These salons are considered to be Non Standard Salons (NSS). Find more info at: http://www.nailsbydesign.homestead.com/MMA.html

Also: Rumor has it that there where once Porcelain Nails, many, many years ago, not sure when. But I can't understand how anyone could think that its possible! They would shatter!

I hope I helped sharon, if there is any other information you need, let me know!

Thanks!

Jeannie
