QuestionI went and got my nails done at a near by salon. I go to them for threading, and they're great- so I figured it'd be safe to entrust them with my nails. The nails tech managed to way over file my pinky nail to the point where she started filing flesh basically. It's totally sensitive to the touch now, and it hurts a bit now to do simple things like wash my hands. Add to that, the nail enhancement is already lifting!
Is there anything you'd recommend that I do at home to extend the life of the nail? I'm going to Orlando in a few days on vacation, and I'm concerned about infections at this point given that the lifting overlaps where the overfiling happened. I called one salon, and they said to use like a nail glue or super-glue, but given the sensitivity of my finger, I'm not all that keen on doing that.
I won't even get into the fact that two nails already look like they need to be filled (got them 24 hours ago), there are bubbles, one nail has lost all shine, and that the tech didn't properly clean the nails in between each application, so there's nail dust trapped in between each layer.
AnswerDear Mindi,
I'm sorry to hear that your nails were overfiled. This often happens by overzealous and inexperienced technicians OR at NSS.
I would not advise glue, as it's not moisture resistant and you could trap bacteria under the lift/glue, and then wind up with an infection (aka mould, aka greenies). I'm rather surprised that the technician would advise such a thing.
On that finger, I would simply baby it, file the nail ultra short, and apply a bandaid over it, so as not to catch the lift on anything and avoid the risk of tearing it off your own nail and perhaps pulling off more layers of your natural nail. Until such time as it's no longer sensitive, and then gently soak off the enhancement in acetone (nail polish remover).
It really sounds like you had poor luck in choosing a technician. It's truly hard to find good ones.
Here's a link on my site to help you discern good ones from bad ones (No guarantee though) and to help you avoid toxic products such as MMA.

In the meantime, baby your poor finger, and keep it short so it doesn't snag. I feel sorry for that poor finger.
Please do NOT glue it. It could make things worse.
The use of a good cuticle oil such as Solar OIl can help nourish it and soothe it. Apply it to the entire surface of the nail.
best regards
