Gel Nail Mishap: Poor Application & Communication Issues - Seeking Advice

Question
QUESTION: Yesterday I got gel nails for the first time ever. The experience was pretty bad
because the lady got mad at me and yelled at me. There was a pretty large
language barrier and I had trouble trying to tell her what i wanted. She did
what I felt was a pretty poor job, although I am no expert. The nails are really
thick and poorly shaped. I would like to have them thinned out and reshaped,
but I don't want to go back to the same place. Is it possible to have gels
thinned out a little bit if they are too thick? And is this something I can have
done at a different salon from where I got my nails? I don't want to take them
off, just don't want the whole Lee Press on Nails look I have going on right
now. Thank you so much for your time!! :)

ANSWER: Sarah,
First let me say I am so sorry you had this  horrible experience.
Here are some things I would like you to know:
* A "lady" would never yell at you!
* Your nailtech should NEVER yell at you.
* Your nail service should be a relaxing experience, not what you had.
* Your nail tech should be able to understand you and you should be able to understand her. There should not be a langauge barrier at all. How can one know what you want if they do not understand you?
* You do not need to be an expert to know your nails are not pretty.

I would need to know what you had done exactly.
I am pretty positive that you do not have "gel" nails on. Well, not real gels anyway. If you could write back and let me know what she did, I can help you out a little bit better.
Did she dip a brush in a liquid then a powder then apply that to your nails? Where did the "gel" come into the service? Was it after your polish or did you not get polish?
You can go to another SALON to get them fixed, but you would need to go to a BETTER salon. You went to what I call a "shop."

Please write back and let me know what you had done and if you give me a city, I possibly could find a tech for you to get your nails fixed.
I care and want you to have nice nails!
Buenos dias,
Lynnette

QUESTION: Hi Lynette, Thank you so much for you very nice reply. I really apreciated
everything you said. :) Yes, the applied the nails using the powder and liquid
exactly as you described. The little powder container said " gel powder ".
Thats the only time I saw the word gel on any of the products. I did get a
polish, but I am pretty sure the only thing she put on after the polish was a
clear top coat. I live in Portland, Oregon if that helps you with finding a better
place. And you are right, I DEFINITLY went to a "shop" rather than a salon. I
wish I could be more helpful in describing to you how she applied the nails,
but I really tried not to watch her too much cuz she was crazy. Again, you are
very kind and I am so grateful for your help.:)

Answer
Sarah,
Thanks for the backpats!!
Okay-- you do NOT have gel nails on at all!! A gel product is kind of like molasses, for lack of a better way to explain it. If you take the brush in the gel pot and held it up, it would slowly string away from the brush back into the pot. They come in clear, white and many colors now.
You most likely have MMA on your nails. (go to my site: http://salon29.net and click on What is on Your Nails? link to read about MMA)
I wrote previously about how these SHOPS take advantage of the clients who really do not know the difference. It is not your fault. I get this all the time in my salon.
I wonder if you paid extra for their "gel." It is a tactic that these types of places are using since many legitimate nails salons are moving over to gels.
I am going to put an APB out for you to see if anyone can help you out.
Sarah, you will pay more, but after reading about MMA, you will understand why that place you went to was cheap.
Please let me know if I can help you again!
I will drop a note on here if I find a tech for you!
buenos dias,
Lynnette
