Artificial Nails & Pterygium/Hangnails: A Professional Assessment

Question
hi just wanted to know can u do false nails on some one who has pterygium(overgrown cuticles) and also to someone who has got a hangnail(tear or split at side wall sorry to ask u this but im at college and been told to look this up and i cant find it anywhere thanks mia

Answer
hi mia
if the client has true pterigium, then artifitial nails are a bit specialised.
the forward growth of the eponychium associated with pterigium is rigid and cannot be pushed back.
depending on the severity of the growth, a very experienced nail tech may be able to carry out artifitial nails.
pterigium is usually caused by trauma to the matrix, which creates a change in the nail plate, sometimes ridges and/or splits; and a scar like structure in the eponychium (the living tissue surrounding the nail plate)

hangnails are less complicared, again depending on the severity, can usually be treated.
as with any problem on or around the nail plate, the experience of the nail tech will depend on whether any of them can be treated.
2 possible problems with hangnails are
a) possible route of entry of pathogens if the hang nail is broken skin, leading to possible infection.
b) possibility of making the hangnail worse from filing.

i hope this will help, but if you need more detail, i advise you to log onto www.thesalongeek.com and do a search for pterigium and hangnails and you may get some info.
also do a search on amazon.com for a book by doug schoon. i cant remember the exact title, its something like nail chemistry and anatomy.
he is the god of all things nails, the book will help you a lot.
