Gel vs. Acrylic Nails: Maintaining Healthy Natural Nails
QuestionHi, I have natural strong and healthy nails that grow very quickly. My only real problem is that I can't keep a manicure for more than 2 days!!! I've gone to very upscale spas for a mani and same thing 2-3 days and it's chipping!! So I thought I should invest in getting a gel or acrylic overlay. I just don't want my natural nail to be ruined or become week or anything after I decide to take off the acrylic or gel. Will my nail stay healthy? or should I just continue with my perfectly fine nails and use polish here and there?? Thanks!! and God Bless.
AnswerHi Eve-
There could be a couple of reasons why this is happening. If you are on any medications or have any health issues(including birth control) or your tech is not prepping the nail properly before polishing. All traces of lotion and or cuticle oil have to be removed and when I perform this service I lightly buff the nail plate to so it helps the polish adhere. She should also be using a base coat. I am not sure on the condition of your natural nails but another option you might try is using a ridge filler as a base coat. If you are still having problems a natural nail overlay of colored gel might be the other option. Gel is durable, shiny, and flexible and will give you a more semi permanent finish( a polish that should not chip).
Good Luck
