Finding the Right Nail Service: Gel vs. Acrylic & Le Chat Alternatives

Question
Thanks!  I dont think it's an MMA based product as it soaks off relativel quickly.  I know that MMA takes forever to soak off.  Would you recommend gel over acrylic?  I have had regular acrylic before and I find that the nails areless flexible than with gel.

-----Question-----
I am trying to find a new place to get my nails done.  My current tech, uses Le chat powder and liquid, but applies it like regular acrylic.  IS that good?  What brand of products is good?
-----Answer-----
Hi Lesley,

IF your tech is using LeChat, it should be an 'Acrygel Combo'. This means that there should be NO liquid whatsoever AND that there should be no odour AND it is NOT applied like standard Acrylic.
Le Chat is UV Gel (with the viscosity of hair gel) applied to the nail, then acrylic powder sprinkled over it.
IF your technician is dipping a brush into liquid (like water) that has a STRONG odour and then into a powder, then most likely they are using MMA acrylic and lying about their products.
See this page for more info: http://ongles-chez-victoria.tripod.com/victoriasnails/id18.html

MMA is TOXIC and illegal.  If indeed your nails are as I suspect, I urge you to find another technician AND report this salon to the appropriate authorities in your area (board health etc..)

There are MANY good brands. However, what's more important is finding a GOOD tech.  Please read the above link, and that will help you ascertain the difference between a good tech and a bad one.

Best of luck.

Answer
Hi Lesley,

It really depends on your personal choice. Some clients prefer regular acrylic (it's harder) or some prefer UV Gel (more flexible). However, combinging the two will now make it more flexible if flexibility is what you desire.
Keeping in mind, while there do exist soakable uv gels (that remove in acetone) MOST are not and must be removed carefully and gently with a file.  With UV Gels, there is never a need for a 'soak-off' for a new set like with acrylics. They always remain beautifully clear.

UV Gel over acrylic only serves to prevent it from yellowing and maintaining a shine.

I hope this helps you make a decision.
