Nail Technician Training & Career Paths in Orange County, CA

Question
I've been a stay at home mom for 25 years, my last child is about to go to college in he fall of 2010. I want to do something where I can set my hours. I'm thinking of a spa settting or a small salon that does a high end nail. I live in Orange County california. What is the best school for a nail tech education. I'm only seeing Marinello in my area, and it is saying its not a complete training for nails.Whatever that means. How long does it take to get going and do I need a Mentor?
Thanks for your time.

Answer
I am actually an Alumni of Marinello Beauty School, and since 1995 they seemed to have changed their programs- as far as I can tell, they only offer full cosmetology training.  And let me tell you, it's not a bad idea!!!!  You are MUCH more well rounded to make a living faster building a clientele that includes hair and skin. My personal opinion on the BEST school is not necessarily the training portion; check the schools percentage of students passing board exams, and choose the school with the highest percentages.

After you pass your state boards and acquire your license to practice, how fast you build up a solid clientele depends entirely on you.  Some stylist take up to 2 years to build up a good set of regular clients, some take 3 months.  I take about 3-6 months, and am fairly aggressive about pre-booking and booking standing appointments with my clients.

I HIGHLY recommend mentoring!!!  Most Beauty School grads get out of school thinking they know EVERYTHING there is to know!  But the truth is, you are trained to pass your state boards, not work in the industry successfully!  Beauty School gives you your basic groundwork, it's up to you to decide if you want to just meet the average, or exceed it!  Attend trade shows, classes with distributors offered by your wholesale beauty supply houses, figure out what you want your niche to be, then find a mentor who has mastered what YOU want to master!

Good luck on your future in the beauty industry, feel free to ask me anything else you might want to know!
