Possible Allergic Reaction to Acrylic Nails: Symptoms & Recovery

Question
I have had acrylic nails for 25 years without incident of infection or allergy.  I removed them for about 4 weeks and decided I would get them done again.  One day afterwards both my pinkie fingers swelled and were very painful.  This lasted for about 1 week. Then they were fine.  Then my left hand ring finger started 2 weeks after that.  The tip of my finger swelled and was red and very painful.  After about 2 days it went down and the the pinkies and that ring finger top layer of very fine skin peeled.  Now again my ring finger swelled and was so painful I decided to remove both pinkies and that ring finger acrylics.  The nails on pinkies are lifted, white and hard and the ring finger has a dark spot which i assume is fungus.  The pain has stopped.  Is this all fungus or could it be a reaction to the acrylics.  All the other fingers are not posing a problem.  I would like to keep up the nails, but at a different salon providing this is not an allergy.  Thank you.

Answer
Jean,
You obviously have an allergic reaction to acrylics. You absolutely positively cannot wear them anymore.

The fact that you have a fungus on one finger is a completely separate issue. That could have happened due to moisture getting under the acrylic.

You need to immediately remove all of your nails!!! Treat your fungus with whatever product your doctor recommends, or you can try an at home remedy like soaking in tee tree oil. Or applying Vicks vapor rub around your cuticle and under your nail plate.

Once you have healthy natural nails. Then you can think about getting nail enhancements again.
