Effective Sterling Silver Pickling Solutions: Vinegar, Citric Acid & pH Down

Question
i was told you could use vinegar and salt heated on your stove to clean your sterling silver projects.is this true?
are there other things you can use besides the commercial pickle solutions?

Answer
hello Lisa,
yes it works, but is a mediocre  mixture. Citric acid is  far better and even that is just OK..I use Ph Down,  available at any home store , pool supply , Xmart or  as a chemichal from any chemical supply- it is sodium bisulphate, same thing as sparex, without the gunky brown sludge sparex adds for filler and far cheaper at that. look for a content of at least 94% sodium bisulphate on the label.Any chemical preparation  has a MSDS online so from  looking into  a product that may be available in your area you can find out the content  of sodium bisulphate and save some money too. Nitric acid is an older and  stronger solution, but  the sparex type chemical is safe to use for  non-ferrous metals.
Hope this is what you  were looking for. Also check the ganoksin archives for many many recipes  using peroxide, and citric acid in  proportions that vary wildly..
Best regards, Ari
