QuestionI had few question regarding the alloy for silver sterling. Sometimes shiny surface sterling silver there are a lot of dark spot.
Why such hose thing happened?
Is it because the 925 silver + 75 pure CU (oxidated) ???
Do you think better using CU non oxidated? or using premade alloy( made by LEGGOR).
Do you have any recipies to get better suface finish (no dark spot in shiny surface).
thank you
alex
AnswerMy Apologies, I thought I'd answered this question last week.
I'm guessing that what you are talking about is fire scale which is prevalent in silver as the copper burns out with heat.
You can avoid this by coating the piece in a borax salve pre-soldering.
You can also use 935 silver which is used by many silversmiths.
Unfortunately your only option is to polish the marks away.
If they dont come out then they were in the ingot cast......
Never heard of LEGGOR, I use Peter W Beck Alloys.
Hope this helps, P
