Silver Clay for Watch Case Making: Suitability & Concerns

Question
I've been reading about silver clay and am wondering if this might be a suitable substance. I'm looking into making pocket watch cases and similar shaped items as a hobby, but as the case size needs to be accurate for fit the watch insides, (not made by me) I'm worried about shrinkage and warping. Is there anything you can tell me if this is a suitable method to use?

Thought it might be a cheaper way of starting out instead of investing in a furnace when I don't know if I'll be any good at it. I can't find any courses near where I live so have to learn the skills myself.

If not, can you suggest a better way of getting started, or any websites you could point me to for some sound beginners advice. Any help with any part of my question would be most appreciated as i'm a bit out of my depth at the moment.

Answer
Hello Jonathon and apologies for the slow response I have been away as I needed a break after the madness leading up to Xmas.

I havent used the metal clay but have watched some footage of it being worked and would suggest that it is far from ideal for what you wish to do.
The meatl is way too soft and will also shrink when heated etc.

You need to use some simple jewellery techniques simialr to those used to make a ring.
You could be taught this in a few hours and all you would require is a torch and some pickle and a polishing motor / bench grinder with spindles.
You wont need a furnace.
I note your mention of no courses.
You may be looking for the wrong thing.
See if there a simple jewellery making course nearby or perhaps talk a local jewller into teaching you to make a ring.
Its quite simple once you've done it a few times.
Email me at pjcoombs@bold.net.au and I will send you some pix diagrams once you're ready.
