Antique Jewelry Appraisal: Is Your 18K Diamond Ring Valuable?

Question
Dear Brian,
I recently bought an old wooden lock box at an auction, contents included. Most was junk but two or three items interested me, but I don't know if they are worth anything.
One is a mans ring, on the inside it reads, 18K HG and then what looks like a U with an arrow through it and then what looks like a O. it has a diamond, probable 1 ct, but I don't know if it's real. the ring polished up nice. Parts of it look silver and parts of it look gold to me. ? Does the HG stand for heavy gold?
The other items are womens Bulova watches. one is, (for sure) gold and silver with 2 diamonds, and the band is also gold and silver with spidel usa pat and then a lot of numbers written on the band. they are numbered and in good shape, but do not run. the other one is gold and silver but does not have diamonds.
Thank you for your time and attention to my request for information.
Sincerly,
Mrs. Phelps
P.S. by the way, I got the box and contents for a dollar at auction.

Answer
Dear Ms Phelps, Well done you - I love to hear of stories like this. - To answer your questions' It sounds like the ring is made in one of the other European Countries like France or Germany, both employed assay systems but only the UK marked gold "ct" all others marked "k". I would guess that your ring is 18 carat gold and that the other marks are registration marks, "HG" is likely to be the makers mark whilst the shaped marks will relate to the City that performed the assay and the year in which it occurred.

My knowledge of watches is limited but I can tell you that Bulova has always been known as a quality maker. It would definately be worth your while seeking  good watchmaker and asking for a quote to service the movements. In working order these watches can be very valuable. Hope this helps Regards Brian
