Jewelry Hallmarks: Identifying Manufacturers & Precious Metal Marks

Question
Hi David,

I buy preowned jewelry and came across a very fine quality modern diamond necklace in 18k white.  The workmanship is very fine and detailed, even on the back of the piece and the diamonds are high quality. I would like to identify the maker.  It has a hallmark "PP" in a cursive style.  Do you know this mark?  Or a website that lists hallmarks so I could look it up?

Thank you,
Judy

Answer
G'day Judy and many thanks for your query

Firstly let me say "well done" for buying preowned jewelry, for that is the very best value in the world and also Tax Free, which I love...

The problem is there is no central registry of Makers Marks and the rest of the world would NOT comply with American Standards anyway. The PP may simply be a design or model mark, or even a retail store identity mark.

Here is the address of one of my favorite websites but you will need a lot of patience as you browse through each page.

It is http://home.wxs.nl/~luijt005/hallm.htm

The other place you might like to keep an eye on is the 20th Century Antique Jewelry site at http://www.jewellery-antiques.com where there are hundreds of charts and tables and articles. Worth bookmarking.

Hope this helps...
