Identifying an Antique Irish Brooch: Seeking Expertise

Question
We would like to know more about this brooch. It was given to my grandmothers sister about 50 years ago from a lady she knew who brought it over from Ireland. As far as I can see there is no makers seal or signiture of anykind on it... it appears to be gold, but it is hard to be certian, and the jewels/stones in it may be amber.
I have a picture of it on my geocities account, that may help:

I have looked on line for similar brooches and have come up with a few similar matches, I think they were called Tara Brooches or Celtic Revival Brooches.

Any information or help would be appreciated!

Answer
Hello Jennifer and thank you for your inquiry. The brooch you have is called a Tara brooch. These typically held local stones such as cairngorm, carnelian, quartz, etc. I don't believe amber was extensively used. In order to determine the metal construction you would have to have it professionally tested for gold or silver unless you can find a marking or hallmark. A very pretty brooch and since it is an heirloom, you might consider getting it appraised for future generations. Good luck !
