QuestionQUESTION: Hi,
I bought this brooch (item270258655784)from e-Bay, the picture is still there. It is an opal stone 20mm x 15 mm.
My question is if the opal is solid and not a doublet. Also
the markings on the frame read 75% and not 750 with will be for 18 kt gold. Thank you for your reply. Virginia
ANSWER: Hi Virgina,
Im not quite sure what your question is ,Ive looked at the image , and it looks like very nice stone and a lovely opal brooch . Most probably from Coober Pedy in South Australia. However, its always very difficult with photographs on line .The stone appears to be a solid , if a doublet then the bottom part of the stone would be the 2nd part of the stone the ( doublet ) , its impossible to tell. But I dont think so .The 75% may just be a makers mark who assign it to as you put it to represent 18k. I hope that gives you some help with this . Perhaps if you photograph the under side of the setting and can see the back of the opal , it would help identify it. Bet regards Rod Keady www.keadyopals.com

QUESTION: Hi again, and thank you very much for your reply.
The under side is also pictured in the listing. and I think
the opal is solid. Is this a fire opal? If not what opal is it and what will be the value of it? Best regards Virginia
AnswerHi Virginia ,
yes the back is visable , well its certainly a solid stone and looks great . A fire opal is a term that is usually used with mexican opal which is cherry in colour so any colour appears like fire ..Providing that when you touch the stone on the cheek of your face it feels cold then it is stone if warm it could be a synthetic opal , but Ide sayits a Coober Pedy stone. Lucky you ...it could weigh about 7- 8 ct or even more , and well it could be worth say $250-300/ct... well done
