Why is My Gold Ring Turning My Finger Black? (10K vs 14K)

Question
I was recently given a 10K diamond ring.  The ring keeps turning my finger black.  I have another 14K ring that I've worn that doesn't do this.  Is it the 10K or something else?  Any way I can prevent this?  Can I do something to the ring?  It's a very special gift, therefore, replacing or trading the ring is not an option.

Answer
Marcheta, it is almost impossible for me to say why this particular ring causes smudges.  Generally, 10k does as well as 14k for most people. It is possible you are sensitive to the the copper in the metal or if white gold, sensitive to the nickel in that gold mix.  Generally, the results would be skin irritations and not a smudge.

The leading reason for smudges is cosmetics, with abrasive particles rubbing off the metal onto the skin, particles so small all looks black. On fingers, this is not the case since cosmetics would not be there normally.  Does the ring have a deep recess inside? If so, it is possible that stuff like body oils, salty ocean spray or perspiration is trapped and will build up creating a reaction and a smudge.

If the ring is keep away from chemical household cleaners and things like that and cleaned once a week, there should be no problem. If the ring has lots of low grade solders in the make up of it, that could be a possible cause with reactions to body chemicals.  All in all, with out knowing where you hands go with the ring and without seeing the ring, I really can't guess as to the reason. Perhaps from what I have said you can locate a reason.

One possible but temporary fix is to have the inside of the ring plated with rhodium.  This is white and for a yellow ring you want only the inside plated. That plate of rhodium will keep the gold from touching your skin, sort of sealing it off.  A jeweler can do that but it might cost $40! US$

The various home remedies such as nail polish on the inside don't work very well or last very long but might be worth a try just to see if if helps.

Marcheta, let me know if you can think of something specific you might do while wearing the ring which could lead to chemical exposures, including things such as "hospital hand cleaners".
