QuestionMy wife and I come across vintage and antique costume and sometimes real ( so they say) jewlery. Is there an at a glance way of weeding out fake diamonds from real ones or at least a good bet?
AnswerHi Dean,
If you have experience as a jeweler does working with diamonds you can separate diamonds from imitations based on their luster. Diamonds have an "Adamantine Luster" as opposed to Glass, Sapphire and other gemstones having a "Vitreous Luster"
This information is provided to answer your question only.
I dont recommend you do this.
Diamonds have been bought in Yard sales and garage sales where the owner thought the stones were fake when indeed they were worth 3000 dollars each and sold for 8 - 10 dollars each along with costume jewelry.
You should at least check for characteristic imperfections, Heat conductivity and electrical conductivity.
These tests should be done by a qualified gemologist to be certain.
