Identifying Gold: Understanding Hallmarks and 18kt Gold

Question
I have a gold ring with a red stone it says on the inside. 18kt ce and then it has this little design is this real?

Answer
G'day Lena and many thanks for your query

There are thousands of different hallmarks - that is why people have so much trouble with them.

The 18kt simply means it is 18 karat gold. This stamp is the most common for South East Asia and the USA. In the UK they use '18ct' for carat.

The other letters are simply a Maker's Mark - Store name or design identification marks and have no bearing as to value. It is there just for identification.

But as there is no central registry for Maker's Marks etc - it means that anyone - anywhere - can make and stamp their jewelry with whatever they want.

You might like to add this problem to my blog at: http//how2valuejewelry.com/ as someone may see it and add more comments. Can't harm anyway.

Hope this helps...
