QuestionThomas, I was give a bracelet by a relative , I was told it tested positive for gold, but the only hallmark on the clasp is 90%, I am confused, is it the real deal or a fake?...it's really cute and I intend to wear it, I would just like to know...thanks so much...Lisa
AnswerLisa, unfortunately with only 90% as a marking I do not have enough information to say with any accuracy whether or not the bracelet is gold. This is not a standard marking, at least not in the USA.
How to find out what you have: Call around and find a jewelers who does gold testing. Many do not test metals so call first to save a wasted trip. With the numbers of places who now buy gold to resell to the refiners, you might find a place more easily to do the testing. A reputable jeweler will be more trustworthy than a business just set up to buy gold. Also, ask for a non-destructive test. This means they use electronic testing or if acid testing will only rub an edge or similar area of the bracelet onto a slate stone. The acid is applied to the metal rubbed off onto the slate.
Honestly, if you like it well enough, wear it and enjoy regardless of what a test might show.
Thanks for the question. God Bless and Peace. Thomas.
