Is This Italian Gold‑Silver Bracelet Genuine? Authenticity Guide
QuestionI bought at an Estate sale a bi-colored bracelet- gold and silver rotating design. It is diamond cut (very sparkly on a solid base) and the design kind of reminds me of staples. It is heavy, 3/4" thick and it has ITALY stamped on the inside clasp. It has a safety clasp as well.
It looks well made and it has on the piece that goes into the clasp DE CAESAR (could be previous owner's initials). There are no other markings.
It had a speck of green on it but when I cleaned it it came off. The green possibly residue from polish (it was near the clasp)?
Are you familiar with any of these markings and do you think it is just costume since it is not "K" marked? Since the auctioneer did not find the "K" marking, he priced it as not being gold at $30.
AnswerHello Janet and thank you for your inquiry. I would tend to think your bracelet might be either gold or sterling. The De Caesar is probably the design name meaning "Of Caesar". The green was probably verdegris which sometimes appears when a metal ages or when it is acid tested for metal content. It could be that your seller did test it and it proved negative for precious metals. The only real way for you to find out is to have it tested by a jeweler. Another good test is if it makes your skin tint green, it is not precious metal (unless you are allergic). The safety clasp would indicate precious. So you see it is difficult to tell without testing. If you like the bracelet - wear it and enjoy ! Hope this helps.
