Understanding 750 Gold: Is Your 18K Ring the Cause of Allergies?

Question
I have an engagement ring that was bought from an eBay store. It is marked "750" and is suppose to be 18k white gold. Is "750" a mark for 18k? My question is aroused because I am having an allergic reaction to the band, and when brought to a jeweler in my town, she was under the impression that sterling silver is marked "750". In the event that "750" is a mark for 18k, what other metal elements are in 18k that would make an allergic reaction? I know I have had issues with metals before, but I thought for sure that 18k white gold would be safe. Do you have any other suggestions?

Answer
Hi Megan,

750 is the mark for 18K gold and 925 is for sterling silver.
The 18K white gold they make today has nickel silver in it  and thats what you may be allergic to.
Take some clear nail polish and paint the inside of the ring that touches your finger. That should stop the reaction to your skin.
