Understanding 'Solid Gold' Markings on Antique Jewelry

Question
Hi,

I have a ring that was given to my Grandmother in the early 1900's. The words "Solid Gold" are stamped on the inside of the ring, but there isn't a Karat designation. Perhaps you can provide some insight into this marking. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Ray Stanis

Answer
Hello Ray and thank you for your inquiry. In the 1800's a lot of jewelry was marked "Solid Gold" when in fact it is really heavy gold filled or plate. The words "Solid Gold" were more of a trademark than actual metal designation.  The Metals Act of 1906 determined that actual solid gold should have a karat mark and is not legally considered solid gold unless it has that karat mark before the "solid gold". If you are in question about it, take it to a professional jeweler who can test it for you. Hope this helps !
