Gold Refining: Safe & Effective Methods for Gold Nuggets

Question
Hello there!
Hi, its me again sir. Remember me? Your information about our topic last time is so helpful. Im still continuing gathering gold wires from integrated circuits. can i ask again another question? Eventhough gold bond wires are of the highest quality and fineness (24k,100% gold), I still want to refine or purilfy or just clean my nuggets. Can borax do the job? How can I use sodium nitrate as an oxidizing agent?
Thanks again and more power!

Regards

Answer
Butch, I would do it much like the refiners do it.  The melt the metal(which they know is fine gold) and pour from a height into water to form fine gold shot. Shot or the resulting roundish pieces are sold to casters and those wanting fine gold for alloying their own karat gold.

For ingot, or nuggets as it might be, I would recommend using boric acid rather than straight borax since this more pure form seems to do better in final cleaning in the melt.

Melt and pour or form.  There you have it.  Once formed, you can further clean by using a pickle solution which is a mild sulfuric acid warmed to something above 100 degrees f.

As for sodium nitrate, I haven't used the stuff since making my own version of black powder when a kid.  I am lucky not to have blown my self into little pieces but my "black powder" generally was not very explosive, mostly bubbly as it burned, making better volcanos than explosions.

Try boric acid and that should do just fine.  God Bless.  Thomas.
