QuestionI have two quick questions. I'm looking into purchasing a ring online and I'm worried that the quality might not be the best. If a ring is stamped 18k does this mean that the band is completely 18k gold or could it be plated?
Also, there is a letter "D" with a square around it stamped on the inside of the band. Could you tell me what this might mean?
Thank you!
AnswerEmilie, I can never tell for certain about any jewelry unless I have it in my hands. However, the marks you give are consistent with 18 karat gold through and through. The mark for 18k is legally 18kt, 18k or 750 and MUST be accompanied by a makers mark.
I believe the D symbol is a makers mark. That particular mark is not any form of mark related to metal quality. Law states that if the item in the USA is marked with a metal quality, such as 18k, it must also have the makers mark near by. This is essentially a signature of the maker saying the quality mark is correct and honest.
Sure, there are those out there who will fake quality marks. I cannot tell about that. The best advice is to purchase from a reliable seller or one with many positive ratings if on an auction site. Be certain of return policies offered.
I do hope this helps.
God Bless and Peace. Thomas.
