Identifying Antique Rings: Is It a Signet or Something Else?

I have a large silver (I think) ring. It has a design that looks like it could be something flying or a symbol that means something. The symbol is set on a sturdy square on top of a rectangle that is engraved with squiggly lines. It looks like it has what used to be hinges where the band and top meet. it also has two protrusions that are half cirles that hug the finger.

Hello Kaye and thank you for your inquiry. What you describe sounds like a signet ring but it is difficult to tell for sure without a visual of the piece. You might check it carefully for markings as to manufacturer or metal content. If there is none you should have it checked by a jeweler. They may be able to tell you what the ring's purpose was. Another idea is to search one of the online auctions such as ebay.com for something similar - perhaps check the Victorian ring or signet ring section. There are also online appraisal sites that will research and value your item for you if you can provide a good photograph.  "What's It Worth To You" is an example and they do charge a small fee.
