QuestionQUESTION: I have an old ring from my grandmother. It has an A* engraved inside of it. Is there any significance to that?
ANSWER: Hello Ginger,
Not knowing if the ring is gold , silver or anything else, it sounds like you have an engraved initial. I would need a bit more information to go on to give you any maker's marks or hallmark registration, as well as where you think the ring originated., the kind of type style used , etc...If it is a block letter for instance that could be a maker's mark..if it is script then an initial is the probability.
Sorry that wasn't much to go on, but if i had to guess it sounds like an engraved initial..
Best regards,Ari

QUESTION: I believe the ring is gold with a rudy stone setting. There are engraved initials inside the ring. One set indicates my grandmother. However the A* is located inside the ring in a recessed box, almost as if it were stamped into the ring.
AnswerHello Ginger,
Ah! the stamping in the box is telling. I will look up what I can and get back to you with what I can find. It sounds like a European date or import mark to indicate time or the place of origin into a specific location. The boxed blocky "a" indicates, if it is British, a date of 1884 - if that seems to ring true then there you have it! the mystery solved, if not I will continue to look further until I find all the references to an 'A' that seem appropriate.
I wish I could tell you more at this point other than , perhaps the date indicated yet country or maker unknown.
