Is Your Engagement Ring Real? Decoding 14K & 880 Stamps
QuestionHi, my boyfriend bought me an engagement ring for Christmas from an individual. It looks real and it was sold to him for real. It is white gold or platinum. on the inside it is stampted 14k and on the other side stamped 880. They told him it was over one kt. What does the 880 mean and is this real???? Thank you for your response. Debbie
AnswerHi Debbie, Congratulations on the engagement! Yes it sound real enough. The 880 probably refers to the carat weight being .88/100 of a carat. without seeing the item this is only an educated guess but for your confidence take the ring to a good jeweler/appraiser and have it checked out. Get an appraisal for approximate retail insurance replacement value should your item become lost or stolen. Like buying a used vehicle, get the prongs checked and overall structure of the ring too. Its worth the money. Good luck.
