Diamond Stamp Identification: Understanding Jewelry Markings
Questionwhat is the stamp mark for a real diamond set in silver?
AnswerAdam,
Thanks for this question. There are NO legal stamps for gemstones in jewelry. The Federal regulations apply only to the metals used in jewelry. You see, even if mounted into the jewelry, a stone is not a permanent part of the jewelry.
Sometimes you will see a ring with the stamp CZ inside to keep customers from confusing the stone with a diamond but this is not a legal requirement and is more of a convenience for the salesperson and the customer in generally fairly inexpensive jewelry. Sometimes a ring with many smaller diamonds will have a tw in the markings, meaning the total weight of the stones. This is also not a legal mark but a convenience and a marketing tool.
We have customers come in to the store to have "grandmother's diamond" or another stone remounted into new jewelry. Sometimes they will have another stone put into the old setting. You see, a mark inside telling about the stone would be useless in such a case. The metal does not change and the marks for metal quality are legally regulated.
I do hope this helps. God Bless and Peace. Thomas.
