Soldering Silver: Lead-Free Options & Best Practices

Question
Do I need silver to solder a charm onto a silver bracelet or can I use lead-free solder.

Answer
Hi, Lucy.

We visited the UK in the fall season of 2008, spending slightly less than 3 weeks going from one end to the other.  We loved that trip.

Yes, you can use a lead-free low temperature solder for soldering the jump rings(loops)of charms.
This is a difficult solder to control and keep neat in the application. On a plus side, the lead-free solder does not normally require protection of sensitive charms from heat and the pickling and polishing needed when silver solders are used.

The most accurate means it seems to place the solder and use the least amount is to flatten a piece just large enough to place in the joint of the jump ring. Oh my, this is not easy to do! Then put on proper soft solder flux and heat just till the solder melts.  Try this once and I suspect if there are many charms you will go to a more normal method!

Some folks will heat the jump ring then touch solder to the joint. This is wonderful if you have the solder thin enough to melt on touch to a hot jump ring and if you have done it enough to know how to control the solder flow. Otherwise, try the next method as it helps prevent solder from running all down one side of the loop and missing the joint altogether...a frustrating event.

An easier way which puts the solder where you want it is to place a small flat snippet bent to fit over the joint on the jump ring, flux already there to help hold the solder, then heating that.  Use care that the flux when heated does not cause the solder to jump off. Go easy in that step or use a metal rod of fine diameter as a solder pick to help control the solder.

That should work.  Go for it with a few trial solders first just to be comfortable with the procedures.   You can even use a small soldering iron with the lot temp solders but remember that silver soaks up and conducts a lot of heat away from the joint and may need more heat than anticipated. If charms are sensitive to heat, such a painted  or with pearls, etc., wrap the charm with damp paper towel to prevent heat damage.

I do hope this helps.  God Bless and Peace.  Thomas.
