Restoring Gold Plating on Vermeil Jewelry: Cost-Effective Solutions

Question

vermeil necklace
I have a vermeil necklace (mesh shaped into a square chain.  The gold flating has come off.  Is there a way to restore it at a reasonable cost?

Answer
Dear Jean,

The most reasonable way to restore the gold layer is to find a jeweler who will do gold plating.  Call around first to save wasted drives.   I do not know what the charge might be but the first challenge is to find a jeweler who will do the job.

Gold can be directly plated onto silver and that makes the work much easier. Whether or not the stones in the pendant will allow plating of it will require the jewelers decision.  For instance, if the larger center stone is lapis lazuli and any of the side stones are turquoise the pendant could not be plated unless the stone were removed first or otherwise protected from the chemicals in the gold plating solution.

Yes, it can be done.  How much depends on the jeweler and the estimated time to get it all ready and actually do the work, including stone protection if necessary.

Thanks for this question.  God Bless and Peace.  Thomas.
