White Gold Ring Damage: Pitting, Cracking & Deformation - What To Do?

Question
QUESTION: Hello,

I purchased a white gold ring 6 weeks ago. Within the first three weeks of purchase, many small pits appeared on the ring shank opposite the stone. They are not round holes, but marquis shaped. A few days later, the ring looked bent and subsequently cracked straight down the middle. Then, the two sides started to overlap, causing the prongs to become very loose. I took it into the jeweler and they did a new half shank. Three days after picking it up, the whole process is starting again. I took the ring back and they polished it and tightened the prongs. I am worried that this process is going to happen again. I work a desk job and take my ring off for cleaning, hand-washing, etc. My other white gold rings are fine. What is happening to this white gold ring?

ANSWER: Hi Erin, I am sorry you are experiencing this. The casting is defective, and became so wen too much heat was applied in the process. Did you purchase the ring from the Jeweler you just took it to to have it repaired? If not you may have a problem since you altered the original ring by taking it to someone else other than the person or firm you took it to in the beginning. You definitely need a new ring for your problems will continue unfortunately. Sorry. let me know the outcome. If you don't get satisfaction you can call the better business bureau in your town and lodge a complaint or go to the attorney general for this function also.

QUESTION: Hi Steve,
I have only had the ring inspected and fixed by the original jeweler. They disagree that the ring is defective and are blaming me. I have contacted the BBB and Visa so we will see. With a defective casting, will polishing temporarily resolve any cosmetic issues? Any advice on proving this to the jeweler? They accused me of beating up this ring.

Answer
Polishing might if the porosity is minor but most likely it will start again. The jeweler should own up to this. Find out who his casting company was. You can always stop payment for the ring with your Visa and find another jeweler and start over. Good luck. Who and where is thei jeweler?
