14K Gold & PT950 Platinum Wedding Bands: Understanding the Difference

Question
My wife (for a month now) just realized that the inside of her wedding band says both 14K and PT950.  The ring was specifically ordered from the jeweler as platinum and is not a 2 tone ring with yellow gold.  The ring also has 15 small diamonds across the top that span half of the ring.  Is there a reason the ring should have engravings for both gold and platinum, especially when the invoice says only platinum?

Answer
Jeff, looking at the band, is it one piece?  With some wearing there would be a definition of the two different metals. Each has different wear characteristics.

My suggestion: Ask the jeweler from whom the ring was purchased.  The answer should be a clear as is your invoice.

Why the double marking? On a combination of yellow gold and platinum I would expect the markings. On a band with a row of diamonds I would expect the ring to be of one metal.  I can only speculate on the reason for the extra stamp.  1. Possibly the manufacturer used a mold which already has a 14k stamp in the wax model for casting and failed to remove this when the ring was cast in platinum and finished.  2. Possibly a non-alert employee miss-stamped the ring then decided to try and get away with using the correct mark of platinum also.

If the gold mark is not too deep and the ring is confirmed to be platinum as ordered and paid, a jeweler should be able to remove the 14k mark fairly easily.

Yikes! What a situation to have, confusing and even disturbing.   The seller should be able to clear this up immediately.

Best wishes, Jeff.  God Bless and Peace.  Thomas.
