Solidify a Hollow Gold Pendant: Is it Possible?

Question

my hollow jesus peice
my question is this. i recently purchase something i wanted for the longest time. it is a pendent of jesus christ 14 karet gold 9.8 grams. it has a beatiful front however the back is hollowed out and is very light as too a couple of peices of tin foil light. can i take another peice of 14 k gold like a pendent or other peice of jewlery and melt it down to pour into the shell on the backside of my pendant? would it wreck the front features of the jesus pendant? would the origional jesus pendant bond with the new gold poured in it . my goal is to turn this nice hollow peice to a solid mold of jesus pure gold with sunstance. also can this be dont at any jewler and would it be best to have them do it if so ? thanks for your time

Answer
I know it sounds simple to do this, but it's not.  You need the proper tools, equipment and chemicals to melt the gold properly and smoothly and then pouring it into the back side would be very risky to the piece.  There is no guarantee it will bond properly to the cold gold, that it won't melt part of it, that it won't spill over and immediately form blobs on the front side, etc.

Really, the only way to truly get a good result without risking the integrity of the design is to send it to a place that can make a silicone or rubber mold of the Jesus piece, then they can shoot a wax from the mold, add to the back of the wax, and re-cast it using your gold.

Try this place and see if they might be able to do all of that for you.  Be sure to ask them if they would cast using your gold (rather than your having to buy new gold from them)

Good Luck.  Hope this helps.
