Gemstone Design & Provenance: A Guide for Jewelry Enthusiasts

Question
Hi Steven--
Thanks for taking time to read my questions; I do hope they fall under your area of expertise, but please do re-direct me if you think another source might be helpful.
I'm looking for a general understanding of the job of a gemstone-jewelery designer, and how a designer would search out the provenance of a very old (centuries-old) gemstone (or existing jewelry). Is there a difference between researching the provenance of a stone vs. a complete piece (eg, a bracelet)? If you as designer were also the buyer of rare gems, would you be required to research the provenance of the gems yourself? Would another expert in provenance be necessary? How is such research undertaken and what tools are required?
Again, thanks in advance for your input. I appreciate your time.

Answer
Hello,

The only thing you can do on gemstones is to determine that they are natural and the quality.
As to where they came from some are obvious what country and mines they came from.  Others not so much.  For example, emeralds come from several areas.  The main ones being Columbia, Brazil and Africa.  They all are quite distinct from each other.  As to the jewelry I can not help you there.

I am not sure this helped you at all but that is what came to mind.

Good luck,

Steven D.Covey
