Mark VII Dragnet Lapel Pin: History, Value & Identification

Question

Mark VII Pin
My uncle was a member of the crew of the original 1950's Dragnet TV series.  In 1954 he gave me a small 1" high lapel pin in the shape of a badge with the words Mark VII, Dragnet, and 714 on it.  The badge has a single prong on the back and the round "squeeze" type back piece has the words "Ballou Reg." on it.  I haven't been able to find anything at all on this little badge.  Have you ever seen one of these and would you consider it a rare item?

Answer
Hello Sharon and thank you for your inquiry. What you have is called a crossover collectible and would appeal to collectors of Dragnet the TV series, police collectibles, lapel pin and badge collectors as well as others.  This was probably an item given to members of the crew and not widely available to the public in this form. A reproduction lapel pin is being currently produced but the original would be far more collectible.  Ballou was a manufacturer of lapel pins and custom items for many years. I'm not sure whether they are still in business. If this was presented only to the crew, I would consider it rare, however authentication might be difficult unless there are special markings. Below is a site that offers appraisals on collectibles and lists entertainment memorabilia. I have not used them, but the site may interest you. The ebay auction has some listings for similar items but they are reproductions. You might look for antique shows in your area, take your item and see if there is any interest by collectible dealers. You might get some offers as well as where you can find out more information.  There are also books on collectible entertainment media available - check amazon.com for purchase or your local library or bookstore.

Hope this helps and good luck on your research !
