QuestionMy girlfriend has a platinum engagement ring (without a center stone) from her grandmother. I want to buy a Yellow diamond and have it set into this ring. I have read from a couple of sources and seen that yellow prongs on the ring will help bring out the color of the yellow diamond. Is it possible to dip the prongs of a platinum ring into yellow gold? Will this gold plating wear off quicker then yellow gold on white gold? Are their any issue I should worry about with the plating process with the ring?
AnswerHello Robert
I am not sure I get you correctly. You have a plain Platinum band on which you want to get a Yellow Diamond studded. How do you want to get it done? The band will have to molten & recast to make the prongs. During the recasting you can get a new design with prongs to stud the Yellow Diamond. The prongs can then be plated with Yellow Gold.
The Gold plating does wear off with time, though it might take years to happen & you can get it repolished in the meantime.
Why don't you go for a new ring altogether, that will save you the trouble of melting the old ring & if you are planning to buy a Yellow Diamond, it will barely add any cost to it, not more USD 400 anyway.
