QuestionQUESTION: I recently had a custom class ring desinged out of 14k yellow gold. After the ring was cast it retained its wonderful yellow color. I then had a white gold custom crest added to the top and the ring took on a rose/copper complexion. The jeweler who is very reputable told me he had to heat the metal up to a very high temperature and this caused some of the copper alloy to rise to the top. He has informed me this might be able to be stripped and if not the ring can be plated. This 14k ring is 41grams and was in no way cheap to construct. I dont want it plated I want it a natural looking yellow gold not copper/rose what can I do ?!!!
ANSWER: Hi Patrick
Have the jeweler remake the ring with new gold and use a low temperature solder to attach the white gold crest.
This way it wont need to be over heated.
Thanks for writing.

QUESTION: Since asking the question I've taken the ring back and had it polished this has removed the copper tone from the finish. Do jewelers often encounter this problem of fire scale accumulation.
AnswerSometimes this happens. If this is a surface issue you may be all set. Keep an eye on it to be sure its not re occuring.
