Rhodium Plating on Yellow Gold Jewelry: Resizing & Diamond Safety

Question
I recently had my 14K yellow gold diamond ring rhodium plated by recommendation of the jeweler. I really like it but now it needs to be resized smaller.  Can this be done?  I would think that it has to be plated again or removed after the sizing.  Is this correct?  Does rhodium plating hurt the diamonds or are they removed before the plating?

Thank you for your help.

Answer
Dear Pat,

First, let's talk about the diamonds. Most stones are just fine left in a ring when rhodium plating is done. Diamonds are resistant to most everything except very high heat and rhodium plating will not affect the stones at all.

The ring will be sized to fit you then finished and polished properly. The rhodium plate will not affect the sizing process, however, much of the rhodium will be lost and the plate will need to be redone.  You are thinking correctly on that.  The finished ring will be white and fit you.  : )

Please keep in mind, rhodium is a hard and durable metal but the plate is quite thin overall. In time the white will begin to wear away and another redo may be needed to keep it white.

I hope this answers your concerns.

God Bless and Peace.  Thomas.
