Decoding Jewelry Hallmarks: Understanding 'Gg' & 585 Gold

Question
Have acquired a pair of earrings that are marked as follows:

Gg  585

The earrings have a center gemstone, I believe is a cabachon amethyst.

My questions are:  What designer uses a Gg hallmark?  Are these of foreign origin?

Answer
Hi Joseph,

The marking '585' is the quality stamp for 14K gold that is normally used in Europe. The
'Gg'is the makers mark, the manufacturer of the piece. I am not farmiliar with any designer that uses Gg as a signature but you could look through the many thousands of companies that make jewelry in Europe for that mark. Thanks, Peter
